The popularity of intermittent fasting has grown over recent years and I bet you have at least one friend who swears by it! Here are some the benefits fasting might have on your life.
1. Fasting helps achieve weight loss by limiting calorie intake
Following an intermittent fasting pattern means that you are likely to consume less food and therefore fewer calories. Weight loss is all about consuming fewer calories than you use, and in this way, intermittent fasting can help achieve weight loss.
2. Fasting is easy to follow
Some weight loss approaches can be complicated. They require you to measure your food, count your calories, or even avoid specific foods. But intermittent fasting is simple – you only eat during certain hours of the day, and this means you spend less time worrying about which foods you can and can’t eat. But, you still need to ensure you’re eating well and not eating piles of junk food during this time.
3. You don’t need to diet every day
If you choose an alternate day fasting practice, such as the 5:2 diet, you only need to restrict your calories for two days of the week. The rest of the time you are eating your normal, healthy diet. Some people find this is more manageable than trying to eat fewer calories every day of the week.
4. Fasting is flexible
Because you don’t need to diet every day, you can choose to fast on days that suit your body and your schedule. If you are someone who is prone to snacking when they are bored, you might find it easier to fast on days where you know you will be busy at work or running lots of errands. This means you can also choose not to fast on days where you need a lot of energy, such as days when you are playing sport. When done this way, you may not even notice that you are going longer between meals.
5. Fasting helps stop mindless snacking throughout the day
Fasting can be a great way to limit grazing if you find it hard to not snack during the day. With fasting you’re reducing your window of eating during the day, and focusing on enjoying nourishing and satisfying meals, which can help you to avoid snacking outside of that window.
6. Intermittent fasting makes your day simpler
When it comes to behavioural change, the simpler, the better. On fasting days, you don’t have to worry about breakfast, you can drink a glass of water and be on your way. Eating one less meal also means fewer meals to plan, which can help save time when prepping and following a meal plan.
7. Helps weight loss plateau
If you’ve been travelling along your weight loss journey with great results but have hit a weight loss plateau, fasting can be a great way to reignite your weight loss journey. If you’re sticking to your plan but weight loss has stalled, a few weeks of fasting could get your journey back on track.
Because you are eating less frequently, fasting can help you to be more mindful during meal times. Fewer meal times means you have more time to slow down and really pay attention to the food you’re putting into your body.
