7 tips to setting health goals you’ll actually achieve
Achieving your goals doesn’t need to be hard
Here’s how you can increase your chances of success when it comes to achieving your health goals.
We know that people who set goals are more successful in reaching them. But it can be easier said than done. Life gets busy and before we know it we’re telling ourselves that the diet starts again on Monday. Here’s how you can increase your chances of success when it comes to achieving your health goals.
1. Work out your ‘why’
It’s important to work out why you want to achieve your goal. This reason becomes your driving force and becomes especially important on those days when you want to give up. Maybe you have an event you want to feel and look your best for, or maybe you want to run 10 km at an upcoming event. Picture yourself at this endpoint after achieving your goal and imagine the feeling of accomplishment. Whatever your reason, this will be what motivates you to keep pushing.
2. Be specific
Having vague goals can set you up for failure. To decide you want to get healthy is nice, but it provides no guidance for achieving that. Think about actions that will help you accomplish your goals and set up a plan to get there. Consider answering the 5 Ws when planning your goal; who, what, where, when and why.
3. Find your support people
The environment and the people you surround yourself with play a big part when it comes to achieving your goals. It can be easy to say you want to lose weight, but if the people around you are eating chips and chocolate every day, it can be challenging to continually say no. Surround yourself with people who will support you and keep you accountable on your journey. Tell your work colleagues, friends and family and share with them your reasons why it’s important for you to achieve your goals. Join a group gym class or even share your story with friends on social media. Follow Lite n’ Easy on Facebook and Instagram, and share your story with other like-minded people. Many customers share their experiences and act as companions of support for one another.
4. Set milestones along the way
We know all too well the disappointment in setting a big goal, only to see no return after a month. Pursue a goal with smaller, incremental milestones or micro goals to keep you motivated along the way. Say you want to lose 20 kilos, start small so it doesn’t become too overwhelming. Rather than saying you’re going to eat healthy and go to the gym every day, focus on exercising three times a week for 30 minutes and gradually swapping unhealthy food for better options. When you begin to tackle these milestones, you can move on to achieving the next one.
5. One thing at a time
Focus on achieving one thing at a time and be realistic about your goals. Having too many things to achieve can become overwhelming and if you don’t achieve it all, you can feel like a failure. This can then lower your chance of achieving any of your goals. Focus on changing one behaviour at a time then move on to the next thing.
6. Reward yourself
It’s important to celebrate your achievements when you start to see progress, no matter how small. Rewarding yourself at each milestone can help keep you motivated rather than waiting until the end. Focus on rewards that support your goals like new gym wear or a trip to the hair salon, whatever makes you feel good about yourself. 7. Don’t aim for perfection
Nobody’s perfect, and it’s important to go easy on yourself if you fall off the wagon. Don’t beat yourself up and instead, focus on getting back on track with your goals. Avoid making yourself feel guilty and do something positive. Go for a walk or eat more vegetables or lean protein at your next meal. A one-off unhealthy meal or slip up will not ruin all your hard work! Just because you went off-plan doesn’t mean you need to give up altogether.
