How to nail your morning routine

Even if you’re not a morning person, you can still find a positive morning routine to set you up for success.

1. Don’t snooze it

As hard as it can be to get out of bed some mornings, hitting the snooze button multiple times can start your morning off on the wrong foot. It can also make you feel groggier when you do get out of bed. Ensure you’re going to bed at a reasonable time to get enough sleep. Put your alarm on the other side of the room or go to bed with the curtains open so you wake up with the natural light.

2. Make your bed

Now, once you’re out of bed, make your bed straight away! We’ve all been nagged about making our bed in the morning. But research shows people who make their bed in the morning can be more productive during the day. Knocking off a simple accomplishment in the morning can have a follow on effect. Plus, you’ll thank yourself later when it’s time for bed.

3. Hydrate

Now, before you reach for that double shot cappuccino, drink a big glass of water first thing in the morning. After sleeping, you’re going without water for eight plus hours so your body becomes dehydrated. Water will also help boost your energy levels and rehydrate you ready for the day ahead. Make sure you keep your water intake up throughout the day and opt for at least eight glasses.

4. Exercise

Exercise is a great way to get your morning started and can help set the tone for a productive day. The morning is a great time to smash out a workout or incorporate some form of exercise into your day. It could be a workout at the gym or just going for a walk or doing some gentle stretching exercises. It will help give you an energy boost and your body will thank you for it.

5. Eat a healthy breakfast

If you’re someone who needs to eat breakfast in the morning, make sure you’re fuelling yourself well. Dietitian Ashleigh Jones says to aim to include protein at breakfast time to help keep you full for longer and some fibre to keep your gut healthy and happy.  We know most Aussies don’t eat enough veggies, so for bonus points, why not sneak in a little extra veg at breakfast time?  This could be a veggie omelette with whole grain toast, or a side of baby spinach with your eggs benny. And don’t forget that legumes contribute towards your daily veg serves, so baked beans on toast totally counts! Lite n’ Easy has a range of healthy breakfasts that can save you time in the morning and does all the hard work for you.

6. Write out your to do list

Spend some time in the morning planning out your day. Check your calendar and get your head around what you want to get achieved. Prioritise your top tasks that need to be accomplished as well as any personal ones that also need to be completed. Make sure you schedule in time to relax and any appointments you might have.

7. Get organised

If you’re struggling to have everything done in the morning, why not start your morning routine the night before. This can save you time the next day and prevents having to make too many decisions. Set out what you want to wear the next day, or organise your breakfast and lunch the night before. That way you can get out the door sooner and get on with your day.
