Tracking your weight for success

With the launch of the new Lite n’ Easy app, dietitian Melissa Holloway shares how tracking your weight loss can help you reach your goals.

I’m sure every one of us had an encounter with the scales at some point in our life. But how useful are the scales when it comes to losing weight?

While there are other measurements and cues that also help to tell us about our progress, weight tracking is a simple, objective tool for measuring weight loss. Many short-term studies have shown that when attempting to lose weight, those who track their weight regularly do better than those who track their weight less often, or not at all.

Other measurements like the fit of our clothes or jewellery, general energy levels, or the level of huff and puff it takes to get up the stairs, are helpful in the longer term; but they can take a little bit longer for us to notice. The number on the scale gives us clear and immediate feedback as to how we are tracking. It makes sense that we are more motivated to continue when we can see our hard work paying off.

That’s why Lite n’ Easy has developed a new app for customers, to help them stay on track and visualise their progress.

We know that tracking is important for weight loss, so our new app includes a weight tracking component, among many other features. Plus, it’s easy to use. You simply log your height and start weight and it will calculate your BMI and help you identify a healthy weight range. You then set your goal weight and you’re on your way.

Then, each week when you enter your weight, our app puts the information into a graph showing you your progress. It also provides you with words of encouragement and advice on how you can continue to reach your goal.

How often should you weigh yourself?

If you’re in it for the long game, then weighing yourself regularly might motivate you to stay on track towards your goals.  Our recommendation is no more than once a week. But a comfortable level of “regular” is different for everyone though – for some that could be once a week – for others it could be once a fortnight, or once a month. No matter how frequently you choose to weigh yourself, our app will wait for you, for as long as you like! It will track your weights whenever you decide to enter them, ensuring you receive the support and motivation you need to achieve your goals.

What if you’re not seeing ‘rapid’ results?

We’ve developed this way of tracking weight because maintaining change is hard, and often we expect to see rapid changes to motivate us to push through. Because of this, it can be disheartening to see what might seem like small losses on the scale week after week. But here’s the thing:

  • Smaller numbers add up to larger, more meaningful numbers over time
  • A week is actually not a long amount of time when reflecting on weight loss
  • If you’ve been on this journey for a long time, it can be easy to forget how far you’ve come

That’s where our app comes in. It makes it easy to track your progress and see exactly how far you’ve come. It’s the trend over time that really matters, not what the difference is between last Monday and today. A graph is an easy way to show change over a meaningful amount of time.
