When Healthy Eating Becomes Easier
For many older Australians, eating well isn't hard because they don't know what healthy food looks like. It's difficult because every meal starts with another decision.
What should I cook? Do I have the ingredients? Is it worth shopping just for one meal? What can I make with what's left in the fridge? Over time, those daily decisions can quietly become one of the biggest barriers to maintaining a healthy diet.
For Loma, that challenge began after the loss of her husband. Cooking had always been part of her routine, but suddenly the thought of shopping, cooking and eating alone felt overwhelming.
"The thought of shopping, cooking and eating alone became an emotional drag," she explains. "I'd developed a habit of snacking because I didn't want to cook."
Through the Support at Home program, Loma discovered Lite n' Easy's My Choice meals. Having nutritious meals ready to enjoy helped her rebuild a healthy routine without the burden of planning, shopping and cooking.
"I needed to get back to a healthy eating pattern," she says. "It's helped me get back to an emotional place where I feel confident and happy again."
For Colin and Hazel, the challenge looked quite different. It wasn't about cooking for one, but about the repetition and effort that had gradually crept into everyday meals.
"Food had become a non-event," Colin says. "Shopping can take half a day."
With Lite n' Easy, the everyday question of what to eat became much simpler. Instead of spending hours planning meals and shopping for ingredients, they now have more time for the things they enjoy most, including bushwalking, gardening, writing and simply spending time together.
Their experience also highlighted something many older Australians value: having support when they need it. From guidance on choosing meals to help managing dietary requirements, the Lite n' Easy team gave them the confidence to order in a way that suited their needs.
Healthy ageing isn't about giving up independence. Sometimes it's about finding practical ways to make everyday life easier, so eating well becomes something you can enjoy rather than another task to manage.
