At the end of 2019, I was in my late 30s, drinking more than I should, and even as a qualified chef, I was too unmotivated to cook at home. In 2020, my younger brother tragically died in a motorcycle accident, and the grief was overwhelming. I coped by eating and drinking more, thinking it was a way of being kind to myself. Over the years, I also faced the heartbreak of losing our unborn baby at five months, the death of my cousin, and supporting my sister-in-law through her journey with Motor Neurone Disease. Food became my source of comfort, but I slowly realised it was holding me back.
Before
After
The turning point came during a trip to New Zealand over Christmas. The hills left me breathless and embarrassed, and when I looked at the photos I hardly recognised myself. I had become self-conscious, hiding behind baggy clothes and my “fun fat aunty” persona. Deep down I knew I was ignoring the truth, that I was not happy and I was not looking after myself.
When I got home, I decided to give Lite n’ Easy a try. It felt manageable, and to my surprise the weight just started to fall off. After the first 5 kilos, walking became easier. Another 5 kilos down, I gave up smoking and cut back on drinking. The more weight I lost, the easier it became to exercise and the more I enjoyed it. Before long I was walking further, joining a park run and even finishing a 5km race. It all started with small changes, but those changes snowballed.
Today I have lost close to 30 kilos, and I do not hide from my reflection anymore. I have been a size 6, a size 20, and everything in between, but now I see more than numbers. I see a journey through grief and back to myself. Lite n’ Easy gave me the balance I needed with tasty meals, portion control and variety that kept me satisfied. The hardest part now is choosing what to eat, though the honey soy chicken is my current favourite.
Most of all, I feel alive again. I am proud of my resilience and grateful for how far I have come. Lite n’ Easy has been more than just a meal plan, it has been a tool to help me rebuild my life. I cannot wait to go back to New Zealand and climb those hills with confidence, knowing I have found my strength again.
